Summer Retreats

A Cottage by the Sea
By Frank Webb

As fleeting as the days of summer may be, childhood memories of days at the shore can last a lifetime. Whether it's frolicking in the pounding, salty surf or counting fireflies in clear, star-filled skies, the impressions are indelible ones, which yesterday's children inevitably want to share with today's. When clients of ours sought to recreate this experience for their own growing family, we eagerly applied our sun block and headed to the beach for some good design fun.

In an idyllic setting on the coast of southern Massachusetts, this house sits in a picture-perfect community of cottages, each one more adorable than the next. Although generally well-maintained, it needed brightening and freshening to make it suitable for the fun-loving family that was about to call it their home away from home. To bring in the light we bleached the floors, painted somber woodwork a crisp white, and interspersed some bold bursts of color and pattern. By blending custom upholstery and detailing (check out that headboard!) with affordable online finds, we maximized comfort, use of space, and personality, while keeping within a manageable budget. This charmer by the sea truly embodies the spirit of this wonderful family, and it touches us to think that we've had a small part in creating beautiful memories for generations to come.

A City Cabana
By Matthew White

Not all summer get-aways are AWAY. This one in fact, is not in the Hamptons but right in the center of Manhattan. When a dear friend asked us to freshen up his tiny (and we do mean tiny) apartment, his directive was to "Make me feel like I'm on the beach." The result is not very New York, actually, the place looks more like a cabana on the beach in St. Tropez. And why not? If that's what floats his boat, why shouldn't he have an apartment that transports him away from city life to a place where beaches beckon and waves sparkle?

To achieve the effect, we painted the walls in a refreshing aqua, free-hand striped in seafoam green. Most of the less-than-serious furnishings were flea-market finds, including a wood pedestal that was refinished in a deep azure lacquer, then topped with a piece of glass. The daybed (which functions as both sofa and bed) is surmounted by a mirror by the artist Clare Graham and flanked by a pair of White Webb designed, neo-baroque sconces. They were made of plaster-dipped rope and topped with an actual ostrich egg.

So when looking for inspiration, remember that your personal passions will always lead to a style that reflects YOU. That's how we like to approach every project, and the process often takes us down an uncharted path with a surprising, and in this case, summery result.

Donghia Celebrates Matthew's First Book and White Webb's Clearly Classic Collection

To celebrate Matthew's new book Italy of my Dreams, and White Webb's Clearly Classic collection of hand-made acrylic tables, now available at Donghia, the venerable (and endlessly chic) showroom threw us a party. Actually they threw us two! One in New York and one in Los Angeles. Here are a few snaps – wish you could have been there!
